Sizing Guide

At Tribbecks we believe there is one size for your ring, and that is the right size!

A well fitting ring should slide over the knuckle and fit snugly on the finger. If it swings around it is too loose and maybe lost or damaged, and if it causes swelling or discomfort it is too tight.

It is a fairly straightforward procedure to size a ring correctly. To make a ring larger, the shank is cut and a metal of the same type and quality is welded in. The ring is then refinished and polished and the repair should be virtually invisible. The procedure is reversed when making a ring smaller.

Often we are asked to fit a ring clip. This is a small metal spring clip attached to the inside of the shank and can improve the fit of a ring which is too large. We would only recommend this as a temporary solution for most people, maybe if a ring has been borrowed or if it is to be worn for a special occasion.  Having said this, there are situations, perhaps when the knuckles are temporarily or permanently enlarged, when a ring clip may be a good solution.

How to ascertain the correct size

In the UK we usually define a size as a letter “A” to “Z” with the addition of half sizes. For example a typical size for a ladies 3mm wedding band is “L ½” and a typical size for a gent’s 4mm wedding band is “T”.

The best way ensure that a ring is sized correctly is to purchase the ring from a qualified and reputable jeweller who will be able to ascertain the correct size using sizing rings. Of course sometimes it is not always possible to provide the finger at the time of purchase especially if the ring is purchased as a present. In this case we would recommend purchasing the ring and then returning it to us later so that we can size the ring – a service that we provide free of charge for all rings that we sell. Alternatively it may be possible to estimate the correct size according to the table below. We wouldn’t necessarily recommend this approach as other variables have to be taken into account such as the width of the shank and even the time of the day, which can have a considerable effect on some people’s finger size.

If you want to ensure that a special present will fit correctly another tip is to borrow an existing ring that you do know to fit correctly, and in the same position on the same finger. We can then measure and match this size.
